Christian Maggio move to Napoli

Napoli won the race to sign the promising midfielder Christian Maggio Sampdoria after completing a deal worth around 11million euros on Wednesday.

The 26 years, has signed a term of five years with the Naples-based club after an inspiration Samp qualification for the UEFA Cup last season.

English side Aston Villa have also been hunting Maggio, who, despite being a defensive-minded player, has scored nine goals last term. His performances saw him come close to break in Italy to put in place.

"I am delighted to be able to play an ambitious and prestigious club like Naples, Napoli Maggio said the official website. "I can not wait for the season to start."

Sampdoria general manager Beppe Marotta admitted Monday the sale of players such as Maggio was inevitable.

"Unfortunately we are not Real Madrid who can afford to buy a champion each year. If anything, we have to sell one," he said.

The transfer fee for Maggio, who joined the Fiorentina Sampdoria in 2006, will Genoa-based club finance the five-year contract recently awarded to Antonio Cassano.
