Cannavaro - captain of Italy will out of Euro 2008
The Italian Football Federation have confirmed that captain Fabio Cannavaro will miss the Euro 2008 with an ankle injury.
The 34-year defender twisted his ankle in training today after a collision with a teammate Giorgi Chiellini, and underwent lengthy treatment on the ground before being carried away on a stretcher and taken to hospital.
Tests have revealed the Real Madrid man has torn ankle ligaments and play no role in the Azzurri European campaign.
A statement on the Federation's official website said: "The news has been confirmed to be feared in Baden late on Monday evening. Fabio Cannavaro will say goodbye to our European adventure, even before you begin.
"The captain suffered torn ligaments, what happened the moment the foot made contact with the ground. His ankle twisted awkwardly."
The statement also confirmed Fiorentina defender Alessandro Gamberini was named to replace him.
Cannavaro will hold a press conference tomorrow alongside coach Roberto Donadoni, who will be ruing the absence of one of its most influential players.
Cannavaro was a key member of Italy World Cup-winners two years ago, and was named FIFA World Player of the Year for his performance in Germany.
Italy Netherlands will face in their European opens next Monday, before further Group C matches against Romania and France.
